Bishop Sadoleto wrote to the Genevans and urged them all to "return to the church" and Calvin replies.

A paradigm of Biblical argumentation, Calvin focuses on (1) the two irreconcilable plans of the sinner's justification before the holy God, and (2) on the question, "What is the true church, and how exactly is this established?"

Luther's famous response to all who would take Jesus' "Words of Institution" in any other way but what they look like.

After stating his own argument concerning these words, he contrasts it with the "fanatics'" interpretation of them. He responds to Zwingli's claims, and to those of Oecolampadius. He next sarcastically reformulates their arguments using other words.

A defining doctrine of evangelicalism is that salvation is through Christ alone. This Today's Issues booklet defends the background and necessity of that doctrine in the face of modern theological attacks.

In our postmodern, pluralistic world, there are plenty of genuinely spiritual people who consider Christ a way to heaven, or even their way to heaven, but who refuse to acknowledge Him as the one and only way for everyone.

One of Luther's best. He tries to defend two seemingly contradictory propositions: (1) The Christian is perfectly free Lord of all and subject to none, and, (2) the Christian is the dutiful servant of all (his neighbor). In doing this, he does a great job of expositing what Justification is (as opposed to sanctification).

J. Gresham Machen was the Presbyterian giant who taught at Princeton during the time of B.B. Warfield—another giant.

During that era, Protestant Liberalism "ruled the roost" of almost every seminary in America. It was, as usual, presented as "the thinking man's version of Christianity." Those who did not "line up" with it were subjected to various insults, disparagements of intellect, and all the usual pejoratives. Machen had gone through the virtual loss of his own Christian faith when doing doctoral work in Germany and had had to cognitively fight his way back. Of course, the same thing goes on for students today. Only the names have changed.

Finally, Christian Christmas cards that are properly focused on Christ and scripture!

We here at NRP have been working hard on concepts for Christian greeting cards which most Christians would be proud to buy and use. Have you been looking around in local stores and online and simply can't find much of anything which is truly Christ-centered and delivers the good news of the Gospel?

Us, too.

And so we're very proud to release our first greeting card, one of many on which we're currently working. This Christmas card, with cover art designed by Tim Baron, refocuses attention away from the "new-ness" of contemporary designs and styles back towards something old and reverent.

Luther chides his readers, if they are papists, for complaining about the "re-baptizers" when, in a sense, every papist is a sort of Anabaptist! He argues that these people do not deserve to be so lamentably murdered, burned and tormented to death.

He notes that, there remains much that is Christian and good under the papacy (Scripture, Baptism, the Supper, the Keys, the ministry, the content of the Catechism, etc.), so if the Anabaptists are justifying everything by "not doing what the Antichrist does", they are simply wrong.

The Book of Concord should be in every Lutheran home. If a person isn't familiar with this book, he'll think, "That old book is just for pastors. I don't have to preach. After working all day, I can't sit down and study in the evening. If I read my morning and evening devotions, that's enough. No, that is not enough! The Lord doesn't want us to remain children, blown to and fro by every wind of doctrine; instead of that, He wants us to grow in knowledge so that we can teach others.
- Dr. C.F.W. Walther

Nothing is more important than clearly confessing and bearing witness to the truths of God's Holy Word which reveal the glorious Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is what the Book of Concord is all about. This edition of the Lutheran Confessions will instruct, inspire and educate all who use it and help them learn what it means to be, and to remain, a genuinely confessing Lutheran Christian.

The Diet of Spires (Diet of Speyer) which occurred in 1529 was an event similar to and following the Diet of Worms in 1521, but had a slightly different purpose. The German nobles gathered at Spires in order to protest the edict under which they had been placed prohibiting the dissemination of the rediscovered Gospel of justification in St. Paul.

A detailed tracing of the beginnings of the post-World War II "evangelical movement" in (1) the Church of England, and (2) in the U.S. After explicating the state of evangelicalism and the players in the drama (again, in both England and the U.S.), he traces "blow-by-blow" how it has become almost entirely vitiated in both countries.

Murray does not shrink from naming names (some of these stories shocked me, because they centered on men who have sort of been on my list of "heroes!") He also takes very great care, as he describes the self-destruction of "evangelicalism" in both countries, to give space and time to the brave ones who spoke out "against the tide" (e.g., Edward John Carnell, Dr. D. Marty Lloyd-Jones and Francis Schaeffer).

Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion has a place within the canon of the Great Books of the Western World. Love Calvin or hate him, it is beyond dispute that this book changed Protestantism for 500 years – and is still doing so! What began in 1536 as simple catechetical booklet grew into a massive magnum opus in 1559. This final edition is outlined here.

The first book of Calvin's magnum opus is arguably the finest piece of theological writing in church history; even an honest Arminian would have to agree. It excels in eloquence, ingenuity, and influence.

Here, Calvin discusses the knowledge of God, how it relates to human nature, the role of the Holy Spirit in the creation of faith, how Christians should approach theology, and how sin affects the human intellect.

The second book is extremely important because it provides a foundation for Reformed perspectives on human nature, especially the enslaved will.

By now, readers should have noted that Calvin follows the outline of the Apostles' Creed. God the Son is the focus of this portion of the work. Those with a background in churches that have difficulty making sense of the "old covenant" should find Calvin's thoughtful approach to the relationship between the Old and New Testaments fascinating.

In the third book, Calvin's focus turns to the Holy Spirit, as seen through the perspective of the economy of salvation.

Most readers interested in the Institutes will be seeking to understand the distinctive theology Calvin lays out in this book, especially his doctrine of predestination (III.xxi). Nonetheless, one should note from the outline that before discussing election, Calvin considers other doctrines which are essential to evangelical thought.

As most good theologians, Calvin concludes his theology with reference to points mentioned toward the end of the Apostles' Creed.

Reformation folk are often charged with "having no doctrine of sanctification." To answer this charge, Lutheran theologian William Hordern writes his masterful little Living by Grace.

Much of the book is analysis of why so many of us Christians "measure Christianity" this way. It is to be expected of the non-Christian, because our behavior is all he or she notices (if he or she evaluated by doctrine, he or she would likely become a Christian!) But a lot of the charge traces back to Rome and to Wesley, so the issue is all too often within the circle of Christianity more than it is an issue to the non-Christian (with the exception of the theme that "...the church is filled with hypocrites.")

Dr. Hordern doesn't have a Biblical view of Scripture's inspiration and inerrancy, but you can just "read over" such paragraphs. On what the Reformers called "the material principle [the Gospel]," he is extremely insightful.

Written by Martin Luther in 1529 in question and answer format, the Small Catechism explores the Six Chief Parts of Christian Doctrine: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession, and the Sacrament of the Altar. Also included are daily prayers, a table of duties for Christians in their various callings in life, and a guide for Christians to use as they prepare to receive Holy Communion.

Luther intended the catechism to be a prayer book for individuals and families and a powerful tool for the Christian life because it provides a brief, clear summary of God’s Word on the essentials of the Christian faith.

Additional reference material includes: books of the Bible; the creeds and confessions; an explanation of Luther's seal; an explanation of the church year; fifty terms relating to worship and God's House; a brief history of the time between the testaments; an outline of God's salvation plan; and fifty Christian symbols and their meanings.

He divides the book into five types of apologetic arguments for the truth of the Gospel: (1) the Pragmatic basis for Christian faith, (2) the Experiential basis for Christian faith, (3) the Cosmic basis for Christian faith, (4) the Historical basis for Christian faith, and, (5) the Community basis for Christian faith.

As a theological student in Finland, Dr. Saarnivaara became interested in the question of Scriptural baptism. Which baptism, he wondered, had the most authority: the one a person received in infancy, or the one received as an adult after a conscious conversion. Should he, as one who had been baptized in infancy, be baptized again, after his conversion, in order to be a Christian in the Biblical sense, or was the baptism he received as a child valid?

Being baptized into Christ's death and resurrection, the sinner is declared blameless, Jesus' righteousness being imputed to the sinner's account for Jesus' sake. This concept of justification is the core of the Gospel rediscovered in the Reformation of the 16th century.

Bishop Butler's Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed (1736) was an important work of Christian apologetics. The deists of his century had argued, "Scripture is filled with nothing but problems! The 'Book of Nature' contains every doctrine that Scripture teaches, but it is founded on science are not on a book of fables, a book filled with contradictions and gross moral errors!"

Butler took this on with his Analogy of Religion. The "analogy" of which he spoke was the one between the so-called "two books of revelation": The book of Nature and the book of Scripture.

This book is a French Calvinist's defense for the Reformed practice of infant baptism. I think that most "truly Reformed" men in our day would say that Marcel's treatment is a fair representation of Calvinism's position on the doctrine? Creeds have been used by the church since its very beginning. The New Testament Scriptures contain many primitive creedal formulations. Showing that, from the time of the Apostles, creeds have been an important part of the Church’s heritage. One use of creeds is as a confession of faith for those being baptized, which explains their three-part division into articles on the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles’ Creed is an example of a baptismal creed.

Another important use of creeds is to combat heresy. In the early 4th century, a priest named Arius taught that the Son was not God in the same way that the Father was God.

Lutherans often get accused of having no doctrine of sanctification.

As hard as it is to believe, some would rather focus on their good works rather than on what Christ has done for them, putting the cart before the horse, as it were.

To this the true Lutherans have always confessed that good works are the fruit of their salvation and that Saint Paul strongly encourages us to look to Christ, rather to our good works. (Hebrews 12:1b-2a, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith)
