Creeds have been used by the church since its very beginning. The New Testament Scriptures contain many primitive creedal formulations. Showing that, from the time of the Apostles, creeds have been an important part of the Church’s heritage. One use of creeds is as a confession of faith for those being baptized, which explains their three-part division into articles on the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles’ Creed is an example of a baptismal creed.

Another important use of creeds is to combat heresy. In the early 4th century, a priest named Arius taught that the Son was not God in the same way that the Father was God.

From the 1950s, pre-Vatican II. This book lays out the basic argument as to why you should convert to Romanism. It will have you pulling out your Visa card to buy your airline ticket to Rome.

This is not so much a polemic against "Protestants" as it is a positive description (by a very intelligent adherent) of the historic Roman Catholic theology. The book is a good resource for the searching layman, but of profit for clergy, too.

Theologia et Apologia gathers together eighteen essays, written by a wide range of scholars, on Reformation theology and its defense. Orthodox theology, grounded in the Scriptures, calls humanity to believe. This same theology must also be presented and defended to a world that has often not attended to its vital message.

It is no small thing that Jesus washed the disciples' feet, as recounted in John 13:8. There are some who compare the washing of the feet to the washing we sinners receive in baptism, though Jesus mentioning that the disciples were "already clean" makes others question the accuracy of such a connection.

Lutherans often get accused of having no doctrine of sanctification.

As hard as it is to believe, some would rather focus on their good works rather than on what Christ has done for them, putting the cart before the horse, as it were.

To this the true Lutherans have always confessed that good works are the fruit of their salvation and that Saint Paul strongly encourages us to look to Christ, rather to our good works.
