This little Inter-Varsity classic has been republished more times than a person can count—and for good reason. Clear, readable, definitive and written for the interested layman (and his friends!) Absolutely the opposite of "for specialists only."

The back of an old copy has the following text: "Fact or fabrication? Christianity is founded upon historical events. If the claims and life of Jesus Christ are mere fabrications, Christianity collapses. Since the New Testament is the primary historical source, its reliability is a crucial issue in any discerning evaluation of Christianity. This book presents in readable form the results of modern research and sound historical scholarship."

Creeds have been used by the church since its very beginning. The New Testament Scriptures contain many primitive creedal formulations. Showing that, from the time of the Apostles, creeds have been an important part of the Church’s heritage. One use of creeds is as a confession of faith for those being baptized, which explains their three-part division into articles on the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles’ Creed is an example of a baptismal creed.

Another important use of creeds is to combat heresy. In the early 4th century, a priest named Arius taught that the Son was not God in the same way that the Father was God.

From the 1950s, pre-Vatican II. This book lays out the basic argument as to why you should convert to Romanism. It will have you pulling out your Visa card to buy your airline ticket to Rome.

This is not so much a polemic against "Protestants" as it is a positive description (by a very intelligent adherent) of the historic Roman Catholic theology. The book is a good resource for the searching layman, but of profit for clergy, too.

After a journey of years through a variety of religious experiences and frustrations with mysticism and eastern religions, liberal theology and social justice programs, and several branches of Christianity, Dr. Gene Veith found answers in Christianity and specifically with "the first evangelicals [Lutherans]."

"The classic statement of orthodox Lutheran Christology. Demonstrates how the Christology of the Reformation agrees with Scripture, the ancient creeds, and the church fathers... Dr. Preus provides notes at the end of each chapter, indicating the location of quotations in available and modern editions." (publisher's catalog description)

A masterpiece by the great contemporary of Luther. This work has been called "the second greatest work on the person of Christ to come out of the Western church" (second, of course, to Athanasius' On The Incarnation of the Word). A paradigm combination of Reformation exegesis and theological prose.

Theologia et Apologia gathers together eighteen essays, written by a wide range of scholars, on Reformation theology and its defense. Orthodox theology, grounded in the Scriptures, calls humanity to believe. This same theology must also be presented and defended to a world that has often not attended to its vital message.

It is no small thing that Jesus washed the disciples' feet, as recounted in John 13:8. There are some who compare the washing of the feet to the washing we sinners receive in baptism, though Jesus mentioning that the disciples were "already clean" makes others question the accuracy of such a connection.

Lutherans often get accused of having no doctrine of sanctification.

As hard as it is to believe, some would rather focus on their good works rather than on what Christ has done for them, putting the cart before the horse, as it were.

To this the true Lutherans have always confessed that good works are the fruit of their salvation and that Saint Paul strongly encourages us to look to Christ, rather to our good works. (Hebrews 12:1b-2a, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith)

Testimonials

It is with great joy that I recommend the products on this site. The theology behind them alone is reason enough to purchase any of the items. In our day, we have sadly lost sight of the wondrous doctrines of grace, and may God use these products and site to kindle a Reformational blaze within our hearts.

Coming from an Evangelical background after having been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church as a child, it was a refreshing Christ-centered gulp of water to my soul to finally understand the marvels of grace alone, Christ alone, and Scripture alone.
Soli Deo Gloria
