This DVD is something that we have been looking forward to making available. Singing The Faith is an introduction to the history and scope of Lutheran hymnody and our shared protestant musical heritage.
In the first section of this presentation you may learn more about what hymns are, where they came from, and how hymnals were developed, than in all your years prior. It also puts to rest some popular myths about Luther's development of church music.
The DVD is divided into four twenty minute segments, each covering a period of history in the development of hymnody, focusing on important hymn composers as well as music from that period.
A helpful study guide is included, providing more background material not covered in the DVD, and some excellent study questions to help you get the most from the material. The 20 minute chapters and the study guide make this program ideal for use in Sunday School, Bible studies or even in small group settings.
The production values are excellent; well filmed, professionally edited with great narration, this DVD is a joy to watch. Most importantly, the music is simply fantastic. Great hymns are performed by very talented musicians. Hymns by Luther, Gerhardt, Bach and Mendelssohn are showcased and examined for musical quality, poetry, and doctrine. We haven't seen anything else like it, and think it is a 'must have' for anyone who loves hymnody and sacred music. The very wellsprings of protestant hymnody are brought to light for your edification and enjoyment in a clear and easy to understand manner suitable for the whole family.
We are glad to be able to finally bring you this resource, and wish to thank the Good Shepherd Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne for their vision and hard work in creating this DVD.
